Independence at Home was introduced in 2012 as a three-year demonstration, which focused on high risk patients with chronic illnesses and offers incentives for improved quality outcomes and reduced expenses.
On July 6, the following bipartisan U.S. Senators wanted approval from legislation to make the Independence at Home demonstration a permanent program under Medicare:
• Senator Edward J. Markey (D-MA)
• John Cornyn (R-TX), Michael Bennet (D-CO)
• Rob Portman (R-OH)
In 2015, Independence at Home successfully received $25 million in Medicare savings during its first year. At the time, CMS Acting Administrator Andrew M. Slavitt said those results supported the argument “that chronically ill patients can be better taken care of in their own homes,” which he said “most Americans already want.”
The Senators that presented Independence at Home to the legislation declared that this would allow patients more affordable care in their own homes, which is exactly where they prefer to be.
