Home-based care is an enormous money saver for Medicare, and its supporters are trying to have the Independence at Home (IAH) program to become permanent.

“IAH is a demonstration project from the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Innovation (CMMI) that is testing the delivery of primary care services at home. Selected Medicare beneficiaries who have multiple chronic conditions may participate in the program, which has had a cap of 10,000 beneficiaries for the first few years.”

In first two years of the program, CMS’ analysis showed savings of $2,700 per beneficiary, per year.  Advocates for the program are hoping that it will become permanent after the 5-year trial is over.  If it does, it would be the first new Medicare benefit in nearly a decade.  This is significant because this program saves money, versus costing billions like some other benefits do.
