IOM Future of Home Health Care Workshop Summary Released

The United States healthcare system is at a crossroads. With an aging population that continues to grow as Americans live longer, new models of care and supports, which shift care into the community and utilize the home as a convener, are vital to meeting the needs of patients and families. Too often there does not exist a link between medical care provided in the home and vital social services that support independent living. By exploring alternative models of care and payment approaches, making the best use of their work forces, and technologies that enhance independent living, home health agencies and others are rising to the challenges of meeting the needs of these populations to stay home. Last fall, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) and the National Research Council (NRC) held a public workshop on the future of home health care. The workshop was hosted by the IOM-NRC Forum on Aging, Disability, and Independence – a neutral venue in which government, academia, philanthropic organizations, and consumer groups meet to discuss the intersection of aging and disability. Workshop panelists and participants discussed key ideas and themes related to new models of care, alternative payment approaches, the healthcare workforce, and technology in home health care. The workshop was not meant to present any sort of consensus views of the planning committee or the workshop participants. The summary presents the most important points raised by workshop speakers and participants. As a workshop participant and sponsor, Corridor is pleased to announce the release of The IOM Future of Home Health Care Workshop Summary.
