The National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) conducted a study of multi-state private and non-profit home health agencies from January 2012 to August 2015. “An extra minute relative to the average length of a patient’s home health visits reduces their readmission likelihood by approximately 8%,” according to the study.
They found that the average home health visit lasts 47 minutes and that approximately 14 visits consisted of an episode of care. The study also found that visits were longer earlier in the day than those visited later in the day. Another finding was that the higher the workload, the shorter the health worker visits tended to be.
Simply increasing the time of visits is not going to have a substantial effect on hospital admissions they found. However, it did indicate that appropriate workload allowed the healthcare workers to spend the time needed with the patient to keep readmission rates low.
