NAHC Meets with ONC to Discuss Interoperability

Posted on Monday, July 8, 2019 12:05 PM

NAHC met with officials from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHA), Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) and Home Care Technology Association of America (HCTAA) to share their support for advancing interoperability in health care.

“Home health and hospice providers are downstream providers of services and rely on the collaboration and exchange of health information with physician practices, hospitals, and post-acute care providers such as skilled nursing facilities and rehabilitation hospitals. In addition, the nature of providing care in the home requires home health and hospice provides to adopt EHRs in a manner that is unique to this heath care delivery method.”

The HCTAA representatives reminded the ONC that home health and hospice agencies are not included in meaningful use and do not have the advantage of additional funding provided to eligible hospitals and the physician community to develop EHRs and advances towards interoperability. Meaningful use providers are given additional time to prepare for interoperability.  HCTAA representatives requested that the ONC give home health and hospice industry with at least 24 months to implement any requirements related to EHRs and interoperability.
