NAHC’s FM 2016 Session Highlights: VBP Payment Models Are Here, Now What? (Part 1)

NAHC’s 2016 Financial Management Conference held a session titled, “Value-Based Purchasing Payment Models Are Here, Now What?”

On January 1, 2016, Medicare launched the home health value-based purchasing pilot program (HHVBP), which will last for five years and can be expanded at any time. The pilot operates in the following nine states: Arizona, Florida, Iowa, Massachusetts, Maryland, Nebraska, North Carolina, Tennessee and Washington State.

The panelists discussed why the nine states were chosen to operate the value-based purchasing payment model. Additionally, the panelists encouraged non-HHVBP states to develop their own strategies by preparing for the future of HHVBP.

The panelists emphasized the importance of knowing your data. “The data coming out this month is only your own data, CMS won’t show you other [pilot states’ data],” Chris Attaya said, adding that as a result it might be difficult to tell where you stand. “That’s why you have to learn how to go into your system and read your own numbers – know what they mean and where you can get what you need to keep your eye on the process measures and outcome measures.”

The slides from this session are available here.
