Two significant areas of focus in health care are the opioid crisis and regulatory burdens. On Tuesday, May 22nd, the House Ways and Means Committee took another step towards regulatory reform action with a roundtable on ways to reduce regulatory burdens in Medicare post-acute sectors. The National Association of Home Care and Hospice (NAHC) accepted an invitation to discuss its recommendations as part of a panel of representatives that included the voices of home health services, hospice care, long term care hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation facilities and skilled nursing facilities. AARP also participated with a focus on family caregivers.
“We believe there is a big opportunity here to improve patient care and reduce health care costs by alleviating post-acute care providers from unnecessary administrative burdens that get in the way,” remarked Rep. Brady.
“What we’re trying to do out of this roundtable discussion and the input we’ve received as a Committee is, with specificity, getting a sense of what are the things we can do either to change a statute, or what are the things we can urge CMS to do to change a promulgated rule or a policy that can lift a burden,” added Rep. Roskam. “We are really interested in working with you through your organizations to try and come up with remedies that make sense. We’re all in this together.”
“This is a great opportunity to actually bring efficiencies to the way Medicare benefits are administered. It is a rarity for Congress to be so well-focused on real life regulatory burdens and looking for practical solutions as the regulatory world is such a dense one. We will be fully taking advantage of this opportunity as we also believe the Administration and CMS is definitely supportive of regulatory reform,” said NAHC President William A. Dombi. “We want to return health care professionals to patient care and less burdened by antiquated and unnecessary documentation and regulatory roadblocks.”
