New CMS Initiatives to Provide Patients Greater Access to Medical Records

Patients move in and out of the healthcare system and receive services, but they do not have easy access to their medical records.  Last year, President Trump issued an Executive Order to Promote Healthcare Choice and Competition Across the United States.

CMS recently announce two new initiatives designed to give patients easier access to their own medical records: MyHealthEData and Medicare’s Blue Button 2.0.

“As proposed, MyHealthEData will help to break down the barriers that prevent patients from having electronic access and true control of their own health records from the device or application of their choice.

This broad effort of data portability envisions a health care system in which patients have ultimate control of their healthcare information and can make informed decisions about their health and care. The administration believes that enabling the portability of medical data and providing greater price transparency of health care cost will also increase competition and reduce costs. These new efforts will approach the issue of health care data from the patient’s perspective.”

CMS is also launching Medicare’s Blue Button 2.0, which is aimed at significantly improving the Medicare beneficiary experience by providing them with their claims data in a universal and secure digital format. Medicare’s Blue Button 2.0 contains four years of Medicare Part A, B and D data for 53 million Medicare beneficiaries and provides multiple types of information including prescriptions and primary care treatments.
