Non-medical home care is recommended to improve the overall well being of patients and improve their overall health outcomes. This belief is why many believe that it should be covered under Medicare just as home health and hospice are. Dr. Laurie Archbald, an associate professor of geriatric medicine at the University of Virginia (UVA), is a vocal advocate for this service.
“In situations where things work well, we see a decrease in social isolation, which is medically beneficial for a variety of reasons,” Dr. Archbald said. “It also allows us a bit of oversight for things like making sure [patients] are taking their medication, and it allows us to be more proactive in preventing bad events like falls. Having an additional set of eyes from an in-home care provider can assist our patients.”
Many patients rely on family or friends to provide these services, but the truth is not everyone has someone who can dedicate the time needed for it to be effective. Allowing this benefit to be covered under Medicare would help patients have better outcomes.
