Predictive Analytics Can Help Hospices Reach Patients Sooner

Hospices and palliative care providers are relying more on predictive analytics to identify patients earlier in their illness.  They are using these tools to build their database of possible patients and reaching out to them sooner versus later.  Predictive analytics use statistical patient data from electronic health records to predict their likely outcome.

“The last 30 days of life is very high-cost period in one’s life journey. Patients can die in the hospital or stay in the [intensive care unit] and receive chemotherapy up until the end, or they can go down a different path with palliative and hospice care that consumes far less resources and may in fact be a better experience for the patient,” Charles Sauders, CEO of Integra Connect, told Hospice News. “Patients in this in this stage in their life require a lot of thought and sometimes a lot of care management and support. There aren’t enough resources to provide the same level of service to every single patient, so you need to identify proactively which patients are most likely to benefit from treatments like chemotherapy or be candidates for palliative and hospice care. That means having some level of predictive ability.”
