Ideally, a skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a great place for hospice providers to find patients and boost business. In reality, the relationship between them is rifled with complications and challenges.
At last weeks NAHC conference industry leaders discussed ways to successfully maintain relationships between hospices and SNFs.
“Trust issues typically crop up due to the natural tension that arises when skilled nursing facilities give up their ability to provide some skilled nursing care, as hospice patients must forgo curative care in favor of palliative care under the hospice benefit.
At that point, the hospice provider takes over the bulk of the Medicare billing, with SNFs being reimbursed by the hospice.”

The cost of in-home care is on the rise due to increases in minimum wage, a shortage of skilled workers, confusing regulations and an increase in Alzheimer’s diagnoses.
Genworth Financial recently released its most recent Cost of Care Survey, it reports that between 2017 and 2018 the cost of a home health aide increased 2.33% and homemaker services saw an increase of 0.24%.
“As the costs of labor and facilities rise, finding affordable care options becomes much harder for caregivers and families nationwide,” Jennifer Johnson, clinical director of CareScout, the organization that conducts the Cost of Care Survey, said in a statement. “Most people prefer to receive care in their homes, which poses the unique challenge of finding enough caregivers to meet those needs.”
