The Reason for the QR Code on the New Medicare Cards

As we reported here, new Medicare Cards are being issued with a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI) replacing the social security number to help ward off identity theft. 

CMS has announced that some new Medicare cards may have a square Quick Response (QR) code.  These codes allow the contractor who prints the cards to ensure the right card goes to the right person with Medicare or Railroad Retirement Board (RRB) benefits.  These are official Medicare cards.
