Alex Azar has expressed a desire to overhaul the way Medicare and Medicaid cover end of life care while reinforcing the value of the benefit. While testifying before the Senate, Azar fielded questions from Senator Whitehouse (D-RI). The Senator said ““Medicare and Medicaid patients aren’t supposed to receive both hospice care and curative care at the same time. If you’re seriously focusing on the care of an end-of-life patient, that’s a completely stupid distinction to force into that situation.”” Senator Whitehouse is pushing for comprehensive and humane end of life care.
Azar agreed and pledged to work on a bipartisan basis to explore delivery models, cost savings and quality improvements through alternative payment models.
