U.S. Home Health Market Saturation Falls, but Hospice on the Rise

Posted on Wednesday, April 18, 2018 7:25 PM

The average number of Medicare home health providers per U.S. county fell by 7.31 percent from October 2014 to March 2017, while hospice providers per county increased by almost 13 percent over the same time, according to a new trend analysis by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Market saturation is the number of home health or hospice providers in a given area relative to the number of patients using those services.  This data comes from the Medicare fee-for-service claims data.

There were 61.5 Medicare-certified home health providers per U.S. county during 2016, but that number fell to 60.57 for the period from April 2016 to March 2016. The average number of home health providers increased from 18.08 to 18.45 per U.S. county.

The average number of users per provider increased for both hospice and home health providers. “There are a number of secondary research uses for these data, but one objective of making these data public is to assist health care providers in making informed decisions about their service locations and the beneficiary population they serve,” CMS stated in announcing the latest update to the tool on April 13.
