VNAA Disapproves Passage of the Updated American Health Care Act

Posted on Wednesday, May 3, 2017 2:08 PM

The U.S. House of Representatives have made some improvements to vote on an updated version of the American Health Care Act (AHCA). Even though there is a one-week recess scheduled, the House is attempting to consider the bill with the MacArthur Amendment this week.

The MacArthur Amendment would:
• Reinstate essential health benefits (EHBs) as the federal standard
• Continue the prohibition on denying coverage due to preexisting medical conditions and discrimination based on gender
• Enable the issue of coverage to all applicants
• Authorize renewability of coverage
• Grant coverage of dependents on parents’ plan up to age 26
• Provide Community Rating Rules

In addition to the insurance market provisions, the amendment would also create a limited waiver option for states to seek limited waivers for the Essential Health Benefits (EHB) and certain community rating rules.

VNAA does not support the passage of the AHCA. In addition, VNAA encourages everyone to reach out to their Member of Congress to express their concern on how the AHCA will negatively impact individuals trying to access healthcare and home-based services, not be able to afford health insurance other services and create limited resources available to providers to serve vulnerable populations.
