Medicare Advantage plans are newly allowed to cover an array of in-home services and supports, very few do. According to AARP only 3% of MA plans offer these benefits. The biggest barrier to more in-home services being offered is concerns about implementation, data and costs.
“We’re really talking about reprogramming money,” Robert Saunders, research director of payment and delivery reform at the Duke-Margolis Center for Health Policy, said. “That means plans are probably only going to offer a handful of benefits. Most plans now are offering one — if they’re offering anything — and they probably won’t end up offering more than a handful over time.”
Organizations are finding it hard to decide what services are best to offer, and then find providers who can deliver the services. It will require companies to think outside the box and hopefully, more and more services will be offered.
